Q. why can nothing other than light travel at that speed?

The answer is a result of the equations of Einstein's special relativity.

This states that the total energy of an object increases as its speed increases. Specifically, it approaches infinity as it reaches light speed.

Thus it can be seen that it'd take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate an object to light speed.
