The English word "trivia" is coming from Latin, Trivium thus meant "the meeting point of three roads", especially as a place of public resort. In the Roman times, a trivium would often have a tavern which is a place that was viewed as common and cheap. The Latin adjective trivialis, derived from trivium, thus meant "appropriate to the street corner", or a vulgar commonplace.

The first known usage of the word "trivial" in English is from 1589; it was used with a sense identical to that of trivialis. Shortly after that trivial is recorded in the sense most familiar to us: "of little importance or significance." Gradually, the English trivia word came to be applied for any information that is of fleeting importance and of general interest .

Another use of trivia in English is in a work from 1432-1450.

This work mentions the "arte trivialle", a reference to the Liberal arts that made up the first three subjects taught in medieval universities, which are rhetoric, logic and grammar. The remaining four liberal arts of the quadrivium, namely geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music, were more challenging.

Hence, trivial in this sense would have been "of interest only to an undergraduate". This meaning makes more sense when thinking of the trivia games of nowadays, at least for people who think trivia is about information that is not really necessary…

The word Trivia was popularized in its current meaning in the 1960s by Columbia University students D. Carlinsky and E Goodgold, who created the earliest inter-collegiate quizzes which tested culturally important and unimportant facts, that they called "trivia contests", so they are the actual reason for using the word "Trivia" in relationship to the popular game we are playing today.

Different Trivia games and types

There are many variations of trivia games, differing in many ways. Some trivia questions can be true or false questions, but this version is not so popular, as there are 50% 50% chances on answering the question right, without any connection to the knowledge level, so the luck or statistics element is strongly effecting, and that is something that trivia lovers don't like.

The most popular format of Trivia game today is the 4 answers multiple choice quiz, although some "hardcore" trivia lovers prefer a version of the game where the players should answer the question "straight from their mind" without choosing between existing answers. In this type of games, there are no miracles, luck, or any other effect but pure knowledge, but there is more space for ambiguousness with the game, for example if someone gave an answer that is not 100% correct, hence not many use this type of games in Trivia contests. The television format usually use the 4 multiple choice questions type. There are game shows that are purely trivia questions like 1 vs 100 game , but there are games with very small trivia elements like bingo america or game shows with no connection to trivia like deal or no deal game . Apart of game shows, you can play multiplayer trivia games on the internet in different general knowledge trivia quizzes or browse sites of trivia questions and answers
